Tony Jacowski asked:

Ordinarily, most people do not perceive being an artist as a realistic career choice. The common impression is that it is merely an elitist pursuit, with no guarantee of monetary returns. However, this preconceived notion may not be applicable to every career option that involves art. For instance, having a career in art is not restricted to just painting. There are various other lucrative career options in the field of art, upon graduation from art school. These schools can provide formal training in art, which equip students with tools that can be used in commercial settings. You can be one of the lucky ones to be able to pay your bills through your art!

Career Options After Art School

MultiMedia Artist And Animator: If you are interested in creating animated images for commercials in various media, like television, print media, cinema or computer games, you can become a multimedia artist. Multi media artists create the large series of pictures, which become the animated images on television, computer games or movies. In 2002, there were almost 75,000 animators and multimedia artists in the United States of America, and this number is expected to expand further in the future. You can become a multimedia artist if you possess a bachelor or masters degree in fine arts, although it is not always necessary.

Craft Artist: A career as a craft artist can be ideal if you have a passion for creating useful artifacts like stained glass, pottery, hand woven rugs, sculpture or woodcarvings. These crafts are very popular in markets all around the world, thus making a profession as a craft artist a lucrative career option. You never know when your craftwork could become the next sought after collectible! Studio art classes at your local art school can be of great help in mastering the required skills. You can also join an art club to enhance your craft. Generally, craft artists work on a freelance commission basis. You can also find work in studios and galleries that usually require creative craft artists. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average earnings of craft artists in 2005 was $27,360.

Fine Art Artist: Fine art is another career option that you can pursue after art school. Painters, illustrators and sculptors come under this category. The competition in this field is fierce, as there are a lot of aspiring artists. As a fine art artist, you can display your art in museums, and your creations can be sold in auctions.

Art Director: As an art director, you can produce creative visual concepts meant for magazines, newspapers, videos, websites or billboards. An art director needs to coordinate with graphic designers as well as photographers, and make decisions related to the presentation of visual concepts. Having management skills is an added advantage for being an art director. A starting income of $73,790 was estimated for art directors according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Advertising agencies also generally require the skills of an art director.

Besides these career options, you can also try your hand at teaching art, landscape decor, interior and clothing designing, or photography.

Requirements For A Career In Arts And Crafts

If you want to pursue a career in art, passion and interest in this field are prerequisites. However, you will need patience, as earning from your craft may take awhile. Dedication and determination often results in fame and success. For example, artists like Van Gogh and Picasso have become household names. People with a bent of mind and passion for art usually find their art careers satisfying and enjoyable.

Jessica Roberts asked:

The baby boomer generation has affected nearly every facet of American life, so it goes without saying that they would be largely responsible for the faster growing careers in the US today. Due to the fact that this generation is aging, most of the fastest growing careers have to do with the health care industry. Of the top 10 fastest growing careers, 7 of them are in the health care industry. In the top 30, 17 are health care related based on data provided by the Bureau of Statistics of the Department of Labor. The baby boomer generation is fairly well off financially and therefore able to afford the more expensive medical treatments.

Surprisingly, doctors and nurses aren’t included in these fastest growing careers. The medical industry is changing rapidly and its hiring practices are now focusing on lower-wage, lower-skilled employees such medical assistants, dental assistants and physical therapist aides for example. All this is being down in order to waylay the ever growing health care costs in America. On the top of the list of fastest growing careers is the Home Health Care Aides profession. This profession is expected to grow by 50 percent within the next 8 years. While most baby boomers are not at the point of needing this care yet, they will be in the following years. Most are opting to hire home health aides for their parents who have reached the age where they need it.

Even though there are no Accounting or Finance jobs on the list of fastest growing careers, the Bureau of Statistics is still recommending them as a solid field that is still growing to a fairly good extent. One of the fastest growing careers in the US is the Technology field. Technology affects us in so many ways today and we have in fact become dependant on it. Software analysts and network systems make up the top 10 growing fields overall. One reason for the sharp increase in their demand is security fears.

There are some interesting surprises on the list of top growing career fields as well. For example, there is expected to be a 32 percent increase of college professors by the end of the next 10 years and 33 percent more preschool teachers. This is just another result of the baby boomer generation however. The children of the baby boomers are beginning to have children of their own and requiring preschool services. Some children of baby boomers are rapidly reaching the college age as well.

Hydrology is a rapidly growing field as well due to the ever increasing population growth. This career field contains water experts who specialize in flood control and environmental preservation.  In the next 10 years there is expected to be a 32 percent increase. Related to this is the job growth in the environmental engineering field. More companies are trying to increase their environmental efficiency and develop alternative energy fuels. This will have a major impact on the type of people that major corporations are going to be hiring in the near future.

HRES 194 EH

H. Res. 194

In the House of Representatives, U. S.,

July 29, 2008.
Whereas millions of Africans and their descendants were enslaved in the United States and the 13 American colonies from 1619 through 1865;

Whereas slavery in America resembled no other form of involuntary servitude known in history, as Africans were captured and sold at auction like inanimate objects or animals;

Whereas Africans forced into slavery were brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized, and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their names and heritage;

Whereas enslaved families were torn apart after having been sold separately from one another;

Whereas the system of slavery and the visceral racism against persons of African descent upon which it depended became entrenched in the Nation’s social fabric;

Whereas slavery was not officially abolished until the passage of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865 after the end of the Civil War;

Whereas after emancipation from 246 years of slavery, African-Americans soon saw the fleeting political, social, and economic gains they made during Reconstruction eviscerated by virulent racism, lynchings, disenfranchisement, Black Codes, and racial segregation laws that imposed a rigid system of officially sanctioned racial segregation in virtually all areas of life;

Whereas the system of de jure racial segregation known as `Jim Crow,’ which arose in certain parts of the Nation following the Civil War to create separate and unequal societies for whites and African-Americans, was a direct result of the racism against persons of African descent engendered by slavery;

Whereas a century after the official end of slavery in America, Federal action was required during the 1960s to eliminate the dejure and defacto system of Jim Crow throughout parts of the Nation, though its vestiges still linger to this day;

Whereas African-Americans continue to suffer from the complex interplay between slavery and Jim Crow–long after both systems were formally abolished–through enormous damage and loss, both tangible and intangible, including the loss of human dignity, the frustration of careers and professional lives, and the long-term loss of income and opportunity;

Whereas the story of the enslavement and de jure segregation of African-Americans and the dehumanizing atrocities committed against them should not be purged from or minimized in the telling of American history;

Whereas on July 8, 2003, during a trip to Goree Island, Senegal, a former slave port, President George W. Bush acknowledged slavery’s continuing legacy in American life and the need to confront that legacy when he stated that slavery `was . . . one of the greatest crimes of history . . . The racial bigotry fed by slavery did not end with slavery or with segregation. And many of the issues that still trouble America have roots in the bitter experience of other times. But however long the journey, our destiny is set: liberty and justice for all.’;

Whereas President Bill Clinton also acknowledged the deep-seated problems caused by the continuing legacy of racism against African-Americans that began with slavery when he initiated a national dialogue about race;

Whereas a genuine apology is an important and necessary first step in the process of racial reconciliation;

Whereas an apology for centuries of brutal dehumanization and injustices cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help Americans confront the ghosts of their past;

Whereas the legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia has recently taken the lead in adopting a resolution officially expressing appropriate remorse for slavery and other State legislatures have adopted or are considering similar resolutions; and

Whereas it is important for this country, which legally recognized slavery through its Constitution and its laws, to make a formal apology for slavery and for its successor, Jim Crow, so that it can move forward and seek reconciliation, justice, and harmony for all of its citizens: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) acknowledges that slavery is incompatible with the basic founding principles recognized in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal;

(2) acknowledges the fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery and Jim Crow;

(3) apologizes to African Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow; and

(4) expresses its commitment to rectify the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African Americans under slavery and Jim Crow and to stop the occurrence of human rights violations in the future.

Virgil The Stroyteller asked:

The impressively long history of the comic superhero Captain America began in December 1940, a full year before the bombing of Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II.  “As the ruthless war-mongers of Europe focus their eyes on a peace-loving America..the youth of our country heed the call to arm for defense,” came the bold declaration on the first page of Captain America Comics. One of those young men was Steve Rogers, a skinny artist full of the patriotic fever to join the armed forces, but who was too sickly and unfit to join.

Luckily for Steve, the American government had been working on a Super-Soldier Serum as one of their tools to combat the ***** and their allies. “Little does he realize,” Professor Reinstein (or Erskine, as he is later renamed) mused minutes after injecting Steve with the Super-Soldier Serum, “That the serum coursing through his blood is rapidly building his body and brain tissues, until his stature and intelligence increase to an amazing degree!..It is working! There’s power surging through those growing muscles…millions of cells forming at incredible speed!”

The professor’s enthusiastic ramblings translate to mean that Steve Rogers was indeed the prime human specimen. He represented  a human at peak physical condition, in strength, stamina, intelligence, senses, and speed.  His power levels have fluctuated over the years, sometimes boasting the ability to run a mile in a minute, but traditionally, he has had more in common with a really fit Batman than Superman.

Unfortunately for Professor Reinstein, he did not live long enough to see the incredible feats his serum would inspire. Reflecting a trend that would be present in many of the 1940s Captain America Comics, **** spies were afoot and in an effort to steal the Super-Soldier Serum for their own and stop the United States from producing any more Captain Americas, Professor Reinstein was killed. But before he died, he christened Steve Rogers with his new name, explaining, “We shall call you Captain America…because like you, America shall gain the strength and the will to safeguard our shores.”

As with most superheroes, Captain America needed a secret identity of sorts. Shipped off to Camp Lehigh, Steve posed as the bumbling and clueless Private Rogers when he wasn’t donning his trademark costume star-spangled costume and matching shield.  While at Lehigh, Rogers met James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, a mascot of the camp. In the original story, Bucky walked in on Steve changing out of his Captain America costume. This secreted Bucky’s sidekick status because “From now on we must both share this secret together…that means you’re my partner, Bucky!”

Of course, those were the innocent days before both Marvel and DC comics started killing off sidekicks left and right, and no further explanation was needed for why Captain America would want a sidekick.  In the years since, Marvel’s changed the Bucky origin story several times, in an attempt to make the teenager fighting at Steve’s side look more plausible. Bucky went from being the Camp mascot to being a trained operative who executes covert assassinations that normal soldiers and Captain America could not do.  The reasons for Steve taking him on as a sidekick have changed from being Steve’s idea to  Bucky blackmailing him into taking him on in exchange for keeping Steve’s secret identity a secret. Once Bucky became the trained agent of the military, it was retconned that he was “given” to Captain America by the United States government.

Regardless of the exact reason or circumstances for why Bucky Barnes was a part of Captain America’s life, together Cap and Bucky, either solo or as part of the superhero team the Invaders, fought against the **** and Japanese threats.  Two of their major enemies during this time included the Red Skull and Baron Zemo, both of whom would continue to reoccur as villains during Cap’s later career.

As World War II came to a close, sales of all comics plummeted. Even Captain America Comics, which had sold approximately 1 million copies a month at its high point, began to suffer sales wise. After some drastic changes, such as wounding Bucky, giving the role of sidekick to Cap’s girlfriend Betsy Ross, and revamping Cap into a communist hunter, the Captain America comic was cancelled in 1954.

But cancellation, like death, is short lived in comics. Ten years later, Steve Rogers and Captain America were brought back in Avengers #4. In this new version of continuity, it was revealed that Steve Rogers and the original Bucky were lost shortly after the end of World War II (the post-World War II appearances of Cap and Bucky would later be explained away as different Caps and Buckys entirely.) When trying to stop a plane programmed by Baron Zemo, Bucky was apparently killed and Cap fell to the icy waters below, where he remained in a block of ice until the Avengers found him.

Steve’s first thoughts were of his fallen partner, and Bucky’s death and the guilt that Steve had over it continued to be one of two major themes in the Captain America tales that followed.

The pain over Bucky’s death didn’t stop Steve from acquiring new partners, of course. After becoming a member of the Avengers, Steve quickly stepped into leadership and training of the younger members, a sampling of whom would grow to include Hawkeye, Iron Man, and the Young Avengers. Heavy emphasis was often placed on Cap’s fighting skills and he was often given credit for being the best hand to hand fighter in the Marvel universe.

In addition to his Avengers adventures, Captain America became an active part of planetary peacekeeping force S.H.I.E.L.D. and picked up two new fighting partners. The first, Rick Jones, even wore a Bucky costume for a while.  The second, Sam Wilson was written as Captain America’s partner, and less like the sidekick that both Rick Jones and Bucky were.

Filipina Eyes asked:

Most Filipina Ladies, who meet an American at an online dating site, believe the USA is the land of easy living. It is far from that. Most Americans have to work hard - really hard - to make a living. The cost of living in the U.S. is much higher than most countries so even basic necessities can be quite expensive. It shouldn’t be that way, but because of political greed the average American family has to work hard to survive.

The U.S. is a land that is govern by a body of politicians that have considerable influence over how the average American lives. In today’s political climate, most Americans believe the politicians’ work for large corporations or special interest groups and are not concerned about the individual rights of the average American. Laws are passed to assist corporations or to favor special interest groups that increase the average American’s cost of living and tax burden. Usually politicians try to gift wrap their rhetoric so it sounds as if they are doing an average American a favor but when you read the fine print it is all about self-promoting their career, catering to lobbyists’ whims and taking care of corporate America. Most politicians do what they do to promote their career, not what is best for average Americans.

Shockingly, for the average American necessities are costly. Laws are passed so Americans have to pay lofty fees for insurances that rarely pay back. By law Americans have to pay these insurance premiums while the customer usually has to pay legal fees to get paid for insurance claims that is rightly theirs. This is just one example of where laws are passed to favor insurance companies, special interest groups, and corporations while hard-working Americans’ needs are ignored. Utility CEOs and school administrators live in luxury homes paid by American labor and tax dollars while Americans worry about heating their house for the winter. Politicians’ medical care is paid for by American tax dollar while millions of children are under nourished and suffer medically. Federal judges are appointed for life and are more concerned about political aspirations than individual rights. This is the way of the land and many Americans are tired of it. It is a land of plenty that goes mostly to the privilege paid for by the American tax dollar - OR - laws are passed to subsidize utility and insurance companies’ inept management of resources that are paid for by Americans so they can live better life than most. It isn’t about FREEDOM in America, it is about money. If you have it, you can buy all the freedom you want. With a country as rich as ours who waste millions on useless programs to self promote political careers or to appease special interest groups, no American should have to pay exuberant dollars for the necessities to survive. But we do pay – political greed trumps necessities for living every time.

Middle America is fading away. You are either a hard-working puppet of the political system or part of the privileged who live off the puppet’s hard labor. American caste system is fueled by politicians who put their careers above individual rights and the constitution. It is greed at its best. Andrew Jackson said: “It is to be regretted that the rich and powerful too often bend the acts of government to their own selfish purposes.” This is more true today than ever. I might borrow Jackson’s foresight and say “It is to be regretted that corporate America, special interest groups, lobbyists and politicians bend the acts of government to their own selfish purpose while stomping on the livelihood and individual rights of average Americans. The fact that politicians can give themselves raises of 30, 40 or even 50% while the rest of America goes without and is asked to keep sacrificing isn’t evident of political selfishness and greed, I don’t know what is. Most politicians live in suits and get hair cuts that cost more than a month worth of groceries for average Americans. For a politician to even think they understand the plight of an average American is a joke. If current politicians’ experience is the type of political experience that is governing America than we need less experience and more political empathy for the average American.

There is something wrong with a government that is more concerned about insurance companies than medical needs. There is something wrong with a government that passes’ laws that can take-away individual property in favor of economical greed run by non-trusted politicians. There is something wrong when local and state government is more concerned about Americans paying their sewer and utility bills than passing laws to protect the average American from greedy, utility CEOs. None of the privilege is expected to learn to budget their money or make sacrifices as the average American is expected to do to survive. The privilege simply raises taxes or pass laws to take care of their greed, they don’t budget, cut waste that benefit their careers or know what it means to sacrifice. A politician couldn’t live in my shoes for one month. They couldn’t survive because they wouldn’t have the government, special interest groups, or political favors to bail them out when they couldn’t live within their means. It is wrong and one day America will stand up and shout “enough, we are not ignorant and are wise to your ways.

I can go on about the state of financial survival for the average American, but my point here is that most Filipinas have an unrealistic view of life in America. My wife soon learn that everything is costly and most of the cost is based on political greed be it at local, state or federal government. Americans already pay enough taxes, but inept politicians waste our tax dollars on programs that are NOT necessary to appease special interest groups and provide funding. Taxes never need to be raised, taxes are plenty. We need politicians who get rid of the waste and spend our taxes on what is needed for Americans, not waste our tax dollars on special interest groups, or corporate CEOs. Today Americans don’t’ need a political leader who will pass more laws, but instead we need a leader who will get rid of the waste and corruption that exist in the political environment. Unfortunately politicians simply pass laws to make their corruption legal….most laws are political favors and unnecessarily add to the burden of surviving financially in America.

I once read an article where a politician was criticizing another politician for not authoring new laws. I say we should applaud the politician who doesn’t add to the already over regulated state of affairs in our country. Most laws are passed to put a feather in the politician’s hat, not because of necessity. Most laws are passed to appease special interest groups or corporate America for political campaigns or reelection favors. What is needed is a politician to get rid of laws that waste our tax dollars. What is needed is to outlaw special interest groups and have politicians be elected solely on their merit. Politicians don’t need to raise taxes – what is needed are better politicians.

If a Filipina Lady meets an American man on an online dating site, marry him for the right reasons. Marry him for love and he will work hard to take care of you despite the government favoring the privileged over his sacrifices and the burdens he bears to live in America. If you marry for love, you will survive together and be happy.
